Gape : Perspective to be amazed
The Problem
During the Covid-19 pandemic, many individuals, including myself, struggled with burnout and depression. Traditional journaling methods were challenging, especially for those uncomfortable with verbalizing emotions. There was a need for a tool that facilitated non-verbal communication and self-reflection.
Creative Approach
Designed an app to serve as a safe space for non-verbal self-expression. The app allows users to communicate through images, symbols, drawings, and music, enabling deeper self-understanding and emotional connection.
Process
Personal Journey: My experience with burnout led me to use photo diaries in therapy, which uncovered hidden emotions and boosted my self-esteem.
User Research: To validate the need, I interviewed friends and family about their self-reflection practices and emotional expression. Key questions included mental health care, self-care routines, handling uncomfortable emotions, interest in online diaries, and past therapy experiences.
Insights Mapping: Compiled responses into an insights mapping table to guide app development.
Concept Development
I designed the app for Apple Vision Pro, focusing on a transparent, glass-like UI with neutral colors to highlight user content. Incorporated features for digital and physical journaling, and collaborated with mental health organizations and artists.
Usability Testing & Iteration
The users faced challenges with the app's novel concept and Vision Pro device unfamiliarity. Hence, I developed a mobile version for better accessibility. Solicited feedback, refined design, and added features like drawing and music functionality.
Results
1. The mobile version improved user navigation and accessibility.
2. Simplified navigation with three core options: journal, new entry, and therapy.
3. Positive feedback from testers highlighted enhanced expression and comprehension, validating the app's impact on emotional well-being.
